Mariner's Home Opener!

Mom, Eryn, and I made the trip to Seattle for the Mariners Opening Day 2025!

It was spring break, so a midweek night game for these school workers was no big deal.

There were tons of opening-day festivities.

It was a really great game, ending with a double play.

Such a blast to be there for Opening Day!

Day 6: Rental car disaster, Indy, Cincy, Reds, Kentucky

Wednesday started early with a walk to the nearby rental-car office. Just blocks from where we were staying, it was supposed to be a quick-and-easy pickup - and Mom and Eryn were waiting in front of the hotel.

But then the lady told me that we hadn't returned the car we'd driven down from Minneapolis. Except we absolutely, 100% HAD returned the car. She couldn't give me another car until that was resolved, and she couldn't help me - I had to contact the Minneapolis Avis/Budget office.

When we picked up the first car, it was a total fiasco. The place was slammed, and after waiting in line for an hour, we finally went to our assigned stall and started loading the car. But then a woman walked up and said that was HER car. Both our paperwork listed the same car.

I told her to take it, and I went back inside to get it figured out. Another two people were inside - also having both been assigned to their same car. Umm.....

So they eventually gave me another car. But this car had been smoked in, and I didn't want to road trip in a stinky cigarette car. So I asked the manager, who happened to be right there, if I could get another car. No problem, he said....

It was definitely a problem. I think we were in and out of five more cars before we got one that we could actually have. (Though this car had not been cleaned since the previous rental and was full of literal garbage) My paperwork still listed the original car, but the manager said it would be straightened out at the gate when we left.

So I drove to the hotel, to the Twins game, and to Chicago the next day. We dropped off the car at Midway airport and went on with our vacation. (We had decided not to keep a car during our Chicago stay because of high rental fees, $75/day parking fees at our hotel, and availability of public transportation in the city)

I stood on the sidewalk with my luggage while Mom, at our nearby hotel, finally got ahold of someone in the Minneapolis office. They apparently had no record of the car we *actually* had rented, and they had already charged us an additional $900 in fees for not returning our rental - the car we never actually drove. The woman said they were looking at surveillance footage to try and figure out what car we had.

Fortunately, I had taken photos of our rental to show previous damage - and also in the Twins parking garage so we could find it after the game. One photo included the barcode! We sent those photos to Minneapolis, and after more than an hour, we finally had a new car.

Lesson learned: When you rent a car, always take a pic of the license plate and barcode!

ANYWAY... our schedule was already tight, so we didn't have time for much sightseeing on the way to Cincinnati. But we did have time for one stop:

We made our way to Speedway, Indiana - home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500!

Brad's dad is from Indianapolis, and watching the race is a family tradition. I've learned a lot about Indy racing over the years and really enjoy the annual Memorial Day race.

With Eryn navigating, we made our way around the speedway and ended up right next to the track and grandstands!

It was a random weekday with no one around, so I was able to pull off and run out for some quick pics.

I was so glad we took time to stop - it was really great! I was a bit star-struck :)

We made our way across Indiana and into Ohio - and then into Kentucky! Great American Ball Park is on the Ohio River with Kentucky right across the way. Our hotel was actually on the other side, so we checked in, changed for the game, and walked back to Cincinnati.

I don't think I've been to a more empty stadium! Our tickets were only $8 (after service fees!) I guess the Reds and Mets don't draw a big crowd. It was kinda sad.

We had the entire section to ourselves. Oh, and Mom tried the famous Skyline Chili (on a hot dog) and said it was one of the worst things she'd ever tasted! She threw it away!

We made our way to the Ohio River Trail for the walk back to the hotel in Covington.

And we saw fireflies! We do not have those at home :)

The Covington side of the bridge also had a riverwalk with historical murals. It was really nice. (However, being in Mitch McConnell's home state made me want to barf)

Our wakeup was early the next day for our flight home. I drove us to the airport, which was also in Kentucky, and fortunately there were no more problems with our rental car situation!

(PS - I've carefully watched my credit card statement to make sure those extra charges were reversed. Everything seems OK now)

Day 5: Navy Pier, after-words, and an accidental zoo visit

Our final day in Chicago started - surprise, surprise - with a run! It was just about a perfect 4-mile loop along the Riverwalk, so I did it again.

And since our previous morning worked so well, we stuck with the plan. I went back to the hotel and showered, then slept another hour or so until Eryn was ready to meet for more exploring.

Eryn wanted to check out the Riverwalk, so I went back again 😁

Then we went to Navy Pier, which was actually just a mall on a pier. Not as exciting as we hoped. But we did find some snacks in the food court.

Then we started walking north with the eventual destination of Lincoln Park. Crossing the Chicago River:

Eryn had read about after-words bookstore, so we definitely had to find that!

It was a really great new-and-used bookstore with all kinds of treasures!

It was a very, very hot day, so instead of walking all the way, we hopped a bus to the park.

We were checking out the walking paths when we realized we'd entered the zoo!

The zoo is free and open to the public! It was so great to see families enjoying this park!

Because the next day was a travel day, we called it an early night so I could get good sleep before driving to Cincinnati.

Day 4: Wrigley Field tour - Go Cubbies!

During our stay in Chicago, Eryn, a big Cubs fan, booked us a Wrigley Field tour. (Mom was still spending her days at the NEA convention)

We rode The L and got there nice and early to scout it out.

When it was tour time, we met our group and our guide and started on the third-base side:

Ron (I think that was his name) was a great guide, giving us all kinds of fun tidbits about the park. Even Eryn learned some things about her beloved Cubbies :)

Then we moved to the field to see the famed ivy. That's a long way to home plate!

We were not allowed to touch the ivy, which can react to skin oils and die!

He said it's just a brick wall behind that ivy - no padding! So it does not feel good if players slam into the wall.

Next up: center field bleachers:

And then we got to go in the visitors' locker room! Besides baseball players, many very, very famous people have been in there for concerts and other events.

Then we made our way up, up to the press box. Really nice view:

I thought this was particularly funny because Mom is the announcer for Tigard High School varsity softball team, and they have an ant problem in their press box, too!
