I was thrilled to join last night with local runners and walkers to show support for Boston.
The Portland Triathlon Club organized a run along the Willamette River in Portland, reportedly expecting crowds in the double digits. But news spread on Facebook, and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds showed up. It was overwhelming.
Most of us wore these bibs, and many also wore black arm bands.
A whole bunch of my family was there! Walt, Dad, Mom, Eryn, Kari, Kayla and Vicki:
After some words, moments of silence and the National Anthem by members of the Portland Opera, we were off. It was absolutely amazing to see runners take over the esplanade.
When we finished the ~2.5-mile loop, club members and those who finished before us were lined up to cheer us on and give high fives all around. The encouragement and comradery was so great! We joined the line and continued the high fives.
Even as the crowd dwindled, the club members stuck around to cheer on every single finisher. An impressive show of support.
I am incredibly proud of my community. Runners are awesome.
Runners United to Remember :)
PS - I almost forgot to mention all the Boston 2013 runners who were there in their race shirts and jackets. Some were wearing their medals from Monday. That was especially cool!
Way cool, Liz. I'm proud of you and your fam.
